Which Microsoft 365 Copilot licence should a firm of 50 to 300 people buy?
Business Premium with Copilot at £24.60 per user per month with Teams, or £22.10 without. It has been a permanent SKU since 1 July 2026, it caps at 300 seats so the whole band fits, and it delivers Copilot plus Defender, Intune and Entra ID P1 for roughly the price of the enterprise Copilot seat alone. The £23.10 enterprise add-on needs a qualifying base plan underneath it, so for most firms of this size it costs more and buys less. List prices as verified between 1 and 3 September 2026.
Why does the permission and labelling work have to come first?
Because Copilot is grounded in Microsoft Graph and sees what the user is already permitted to see. Where permissions have sprawled, Copilot makes that legible in a way search never did. Restricted SharePoint Search was the cheap way to hold the line and it has been closed to new enablement since 31 July 2026. So the sequence is a Purview oversharing assessment and site access reviews before anyone beyond the pilot, then labels on the ten document types that matter, and then the rollout.
What are Copilot Credits, and what do they actually cost?
They are a tenant-wide pool at $0.008 prepaid or $0.01 pay as you go. A classic answer is 1 credit, a generative answer 2, an agent action 5, tenant graph grounding 10 credits a message, agent flow actions 13 per hundred, content processing 8 a page and Computer Use 5 a step. Meters stack, so graph grounding plus a generative answer is 12. Four things draw the same pool: Copilot Studio agents, Cowork runtime, Work IQ API calls and agent flows. Employee-facing usage is free for users already licensed with M365 Copilot, which is the argument for buying seats for whoever uses agents daily. Rates as verified between 1 and 3 September 2026.
Can Copilot Studio build the agent we need, or do we have to build one?
Copilot Studio is the right answer for a scoped, tenant-resident, human-initiated agent over SharePoint, and it takes two to six weeks. It is the wrong answer when the audience is not an employee, when the work is high-volume batch against a rubric, or when the work starts on an event rather than a prompt. Declarative agents are single-user and user-initiated and confined to Microsoft channels, so a client portal or an unattended run needs a custom engine agent. Microsoft can host it. You are still building it.
Where is Microsoft 365 Copilot the wrong tool?
Five places, and we say so rather than sell around them. When the frontier model matters more than tenant reach, because Copilot's depth on open-ended reasoning is its weak spot. When the audience is a client or a patient rather than an employee. When the work is high-volume batch, because per-credit pricing is the wrong meter for 500 files a month at 10 credits a grounded message. When the work is a live event stream, because nothing in the Copilot family processes events. And when Excel is the substance of the work, because Copilot in Excel is the platform's thinnest surface.
Does Copilot keep our data inside the UK or EU?
On Microsoft's own models, yes. Copilot is the only path today where the whole thing stays inside the tenant boundary, with UK and EU commitment regions, sensitivity labels honoured and inherited, and the unified audit log, eDiscovery and Purview controls you already run. The catch is the frontier models: Anthropic models inside Microsoft 365 Copilot process outside the EU Data Boundary, and Microsoft's own pages disagree about the default state for UK and EU tenants. Check the toggle in your own admin centre rather than trusting either page, and minute the decision. Position as verified between 1 and 3 September 2026.
